ARRahman is bAck...
Well I am big fan of Isai Puyal ARR and I was not very happy with the tunes that he doled out for some time from 2004 to 2006.Then came the big break If I remember correct it was Rang De Basanti and I should say that he had found his touch.Actually Swades was pretty decent where he had scored 2 wonderful melodies. But still the AR magic was missing!!

Rang De basanti was the start I think where he managed to find new voices and may be reconfigured the BIOS in the songs :)THen the striking release for Rahman was Jillunu Oru Kadhal and Godfather which I should say were extremely well composed.I would rate Jillunu ORu Kadhal better than GOdfather cause in the former the music really gelled well with the story line.Godfather too had amazing songs but some how I left Jillinu was better!
The beauty of the songs in Jillunu oru kadhal was that you could picturise the songs with your eyes closed when you listened to it in your iPODs.New York Nagaram was just perfect - the lyrics , music, the tinge of chill in the song synonymous with the chill NY winds. The music also hada sense of longing that a person would find himself filled with loneliness..!!Quite the true rahman Song.
The next song was Mubae VA...Well this song is that perfect song for those lovers(Success or failure..!!)Amazing song in many senses. The music and orchestration has a mild romance about it and female voice modulation has been selected to suit a verysoft female character.I suppose the music and the voice selection were a master stroke my the master again.
The other songs in the movie were in line with the normal rahman songs!!I also did manage to watch the movie and I should concede that the rerecording in the movie is also of good quality!!All in all a treat for the ARR fans. This was when I thought ARR is back!!
Godfather also it's share of wonderdul songs. My favourite is Kaatril song that had lot of emotion embedded in the song(and ofcourse ASIN).Inisai song and the remix version were perfecr master pieces but for numerous transitions from one genre of music to another in short intervals.!!
Then came GURU.A period film as it looks from its trailors, scoring music for which is daunting taks in itself!!Moving to the songs I should say that again the Mani,ARR and gulzar trio have worked the magic. The music is a precursor for the kind of product a movie would turn out to be.Some times it so happens that an ordinary movie with good songs would too extremely in the box office in India as I have seen previosuly.
This movie has got about three excellent songs.
1.The song sung by Bappi Lahari - Jodi he yeh !!Is an excellent peppy number which helps us remember Bappi Da and his style of music!
2.Barse Rae is also an excellent piece with exemplerary orchestration!!
3.Tere Bina is an excellent song just because rahman has recreated his magic again..He is a master when it comes to creating Tabla based Rhythm and simplebut attaractive music.Reminds me of music of Bombay!!4.Jagae Hain is a nice song that is fit to be a theme song - Typical rahman song!!
Other then that I see that rahman has been evolving over the past few years. The last album that captured my attention was Yuva(Music was exemplerary!!)
I think we could have some more of the Rahman magic !!

I agree with you on most of the things. I differ with ur views on Godfather which had a couple of good numbers. I could only see traces of ARR in this Movie. "Thottapuram, Dinam Dinam diwali" sounded run of the mill to Ordinary compostions to me.
Innisai was terrific . And the "amma" Song was decent.
But then RDB and GURU have his class stamped all over it. Awesome is the word.
It is also very interesting to see ARR singing his own compositions more frequently. "No qualms" as he is doing a very good job of it. He is a master in choosing what suits his vocals the best ..
He is at his emotive best in " New York Nagaram" . "Lukha chuppi" and "Tere bin" bring out his true class as a singer. Man It should take some guts to sing a duet with Lataji.
Another aspect which I'm seeing off late is his experimentation with other International Genres of music. Some might think that he has been doing this since Thiruda Thiruda days.
But then the difference here is that, he is attempting to come out with numbers which can be authentically categorised as Jazz or Celtic or Mediteranian.
The title song in JOK is authentic Jazz.
And Mayya was a good attempt too. But then with this song, Though the adaption to other genre was respledent, the compostion in itself did not have much strength and started sounded repetitive within itself.
Anyways ARR remains a Genius, Hoping to see the best of him.
Keep posting more.
Cheers,
Barani
